History of direct marketing data delivery

Ten years ago, a one-week turn around was the norm for data delivery from list marketers. The process was labor and resource intensive. It involved: a catalogue type book of lists, telephone consultation with a company representative, a review of approximate counts, manual paper orders, processing on mainframe computer tape and shipping to a service bureau.

Since the advent of computers and fax machines, processing is less time intensive, but the standard of delivery is still 24 to 48 hours for most list marketers.
